Basseterre, St. Kitts—In a significant move, the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Energy, Utilities, and Domestic Transport convened a closed meeting on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, with leadership from the Ministry of Constituency Empowerment to strategize how both Ministries can effectively collaborate to educate locals on the importance of water conservation.
The Honourable Minister of Public Infrastructure et al., Konris Maynard, has consistently implored the general public to implement water conservation methods in his interactions with the media, including his most recent address for World Water Day 2024. Likewise, the Manager of the St. Kitts Water Services Department (WSD), Cromwell Williams, and his team have consistently spoken about water conservation practices in media appearances on ZIZ’s fortnightly Water Line program, WINN Media SKN’s Island Tea Morning Show, and Freedom FM’s Issues among others.
Extensive drought conditions have heightened the general public’s focus on water management, as multiple areas on the island have experienced increased and extended interruptions in water service. Wednesday’s meeting provided a platform for discussing a multi-ministerial approach to water management that includes plans to educate the communities most affected by water service interruptions about the impact of climate change and the deliberate changes in water consumption practices necessary to mitigate it.
